Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said Sunday that ByteDance would need to change the law to keep TikTok online if it does not sell the video app to entities not affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party. said that it would be necessary. party.
“It seems to me that if someone else is going to buy TikTok and do something contrary to ByteDance no longer owning TikTok, the law needs to change. And if it's legitimate. , I think Congress will consider it under President Trump's leadership,” Jordan said in an interview with Dana Bash on CNN's “State of the Union.”
“But we are fortunate that President Trump is eager to work with us to find a solution,” he said. “So I think everyone thinks this problem is going to be solved because there's going to be someone coming to the White House tomorrow who knows how to make deals and who knows how to solve things. “So I'm confident in that.” ”
Jordan said he was pleased with the 90-day extension granted as part of a bipartisan bill passed by Congress last April. The bill gave TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance 270 days to withdraw from the app or face banning from U.S. app stores.
“What we don't want is China to spy on Americans. We don't want China to influence young people or the 170 million people who interact with this app. “We don't want that. That's what we want,” he said when asked what he would like to see happen.
“I think we're open to how that gets resolved and we're open to different scenarios,” he continued. “But at this point, the law is the law, and of course these companies are complying with the law. They don't want the liability concerns that would arise if they left this app and continued.”
