The U.S. Border Patrol agent killed in a shootout with an armed suspect on Monday has been identified as 44-year-old David Marand, Customs and Border Protection officials told Fox News.

The veteran officer was arrested after a traffic stop on Interstate 91 between Newport and Orleans, Vermont, about 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border, about 3:15 p.m. Monday, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Died.

“A Border Patrol agent assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol's Swanton Sector was shot and killed in the line of duty,” Acting DHS Secretary Benjamin Huffman said in a statement. “Border Patrol agents put themselves at risk every day to keep Americans and our country safe.”

Marando and a suspect were killed in the ensuing gunfight. A second suspect was injured and taken into custody, the FBI said.

The suspect's immigration status was not immediately available.

A remote-controlled robot was seen searching backpacks and other equipment at the scene, with the suspect's body still visible in the background.

Vermont State Police closed the interstate in both directions near mile marker 168 for several hours Monday, eventually reopening only the northbound lanes.

The FBI's Albany field office is investigating.

The shooting occurred just hours after President Trump was inaugurated for his second term. His campaign focused on securing borders and defending law enforcement.

Officials have long warned that under the Biden-Harris administration, there has been a surge in illegal immigration at Canada's northern border, particularly from the country's southern tip.
