On Monday night, the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34-23.

During the game, Howard threw two touchdown passes and made a clutch throw to Jeremiah Smith on third down. Sawyer had three tackles in the game.

Howard said his own faith in God has been renewed in his heart following their victory.

“First and foremost, I must give glory and praise to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Without Him I would not be here,” Howard said. “I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my teammates, my family, and everyone who bet on me in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. I'm speechless right now.”

Howard then won the Offensive MVP Award and once again praised God.

“Before I say anything, I must give all glory and praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen,” he said, adding, “God has given me the opportunity to be a Buckeye. I was really happy that he gave it to me,” he added.

Sawyer also took time in his post-victory speech to thank God.

“This is the best feeling I've ever felt in my life. This is exactly what we all envisioned when we decided to come back – go out there, do it this way, finish this way. “That's what it is,” he said.

“I'm just grateful to God for giving me the ability to go out there and make it through the ups and downs. He was on our side and we knew it. We made it through the adversity. But this feels really good.”

The confidence between both teams was on full display heading into the championship. Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard suggested before the game that it was faith in God that led his players to the national title game.

“I truly believe that Jesus was watching over our shoulders all season and there was a reason why he put these two teams down.”
