WASHINGTON, DC — Former Texas border czar Mike Banks took command of the U.S. Border Patrol on Monday. President Donald Trump appointed Banks to head the U.S. Border Patrol shortly after taking office.
Nearly two years ago, Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed a 23-year veteran Border Patrol agent as the nation's first state-appointed border czar, Breitbart Texas reported. . Banks' appointment comes days after he retired from the Border Patrol.
“We have found the right person for the job in Mike Banks,” Abbott said in making the announcement. “Mike Banks is an award-winning Border Patrol agent. He has served in key Border Patrol leadership positions for more than 20 years and under four presidents.”
“Securing our nation's borders is something I have dedicated the past 23 years of my life to and something I am deeply passionate about,” Banks said after his appointment.
President Trump's appointment of Mr. Banks comes shortly after Secretary Jason D. Owens announced his retirement. President Joe Biden appointed Owens to the position in June 2023. Former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Owens' appointment came at a difficult time for the agency. “We are grateful that he has accepted this challenge, just as he has accepted so many others throughout his distinguished law enforcement career.”
Banks now faces the challenge of resolving the Biden border crisis, which has allowed record numbers of immigrants to cross the border illegally. President Trump has tapped Banks to carry out his new border security agenda.
President Trump signed at least 10 executive orders related to border security and other immigration-related measures on Monday, Breitbart Texas reported. As head of the Border Patrol, Banks will be responsible for carrying out these orders.
