Nick Saban backs Deion Sanders for Cowboys gig

Nick Saban wants Deion Sanders to be the Cowboys' next coach.

The legendary college football coach appeared on the podcast “The Pivot” with Ryan Clark this week and voiced his support for Sanders as he joked about Saban potentially returning to the NFL.

“I want him to get the job,” Saban said of the Colorado Buffaloes' current head coach.

The Cowboys are looking for a new head coach after parting ways with Mike McCarthy earlier this month after five seasons at the helm.

Sanders' name has been linked to the position in recent days, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that no interviews with the former Cowboys defensive back have been scheduled or “not expected.” Ta.

Still, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has spoken with Sanders about the job and is reportedly “enthusiastic about the idea” of hiring him, according to Dallas insider Ed Warder.

Sanders, who played five seasons with the Cowboys and won Super Bowl 30, told ESPN earlier this month that he spoke with Jones about the vacancy and called it an “interesting” opportunity.

“It's really nice and interesting to hear from Jerry Jones,” Sanders said. “I love Jerry and I believe in Jerry. When I get off the phone and process and think about it, it's interesting. But I love Boulder and our team, our coaches, our students. I love the organization and everything about the community.”

Sanders spent the past two seasons as head coach at the University of Colorado, going 13-12.

His son, quarterback Shedur Sanders, is expected to be one of the top picks in April's NFL Draft.

Saban resigned as head coach at Alabama a year ago after winning six national titles in 17 seasons with the Crimson Tide and LSU.

Sanders, a friend of Saban's, congratulated Saban on his legendary career after news of his retirement broke last January.

“Wow! College football just forced the GOAT into retirement,” Sanders wrote. “Wow! We knew it was going to happen within a day, but it didn't happen this quickly. The game has changed so much that we've gotten rid of the GOAT. Hey college football, hold up a mirror and see what you see. Let's be honest about what we have.”
