Tennis star Novak Djokovic was booed by fans after he withdrew from his much-anticipated match against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open due to injury.
Djokovic suffered a muscle strain when he lost to Carloa Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. The Serbian tennis sensation started his match against Zverev by dropping the first set 7-6. However, Djokovic was unable to continue beyond the first set and dropped the match.
The crowd booed enthusiastically as Djokovic gave a thumbs up and left the court.
In the post-match interview, Zverev appealed to the crowd not to disrespect the Serbian legend.
Coach Zverev said, “If a player withdraws due to injury, I hope they don't boo.'' “Novak Djokovic is a man who has dedicated his life to this sport for the past 20 years. He won this tournament despite suffering an abdominal tear. He won this tournament despite suffering a torn hamstring. He won. If he can't continue playing tennis, that means he can't continue playing tennis.”
Djokovic posted a message to X explaining his decision to withdraw and wishing Zverev well.
“I tried to recover for today's match, but I could only push so far. Still, there are positives to take from this year's Australian Open. Congratulations.
Thanks again for making it to the GS finals. I hope you win the title, because you deserve it, my friend. ”
Australian fans and the Australian government have had an unfavorable relationship with Djokovic since the Serbian refused to comply with the country's strict coronavirus vaccination requirements.
