South Korean prosecutors have charged President Yoon Suk-Yeol with impeachment in connection with the sedition charges.
South Korea's parliament voted to impeach Yoon last month after briefly declaring martial law and plunging the country into chaos.
South Korean news outlets reported that the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office had indicted Yoon on charges of sedition. The Associated Press reported.
Since declaring martial law, Yun has apologized. His actions sparked outrage from citizens and lawmakers. Congress blocked the declaration of martial law, and Yun later reinstated it.
Law enforcement investigated Yoon, requested a warrant, and ultimately succeeded in recovering the president.
Yun later said he was skipping the first day of the impeachment trial over security concerns.
Yun defended his reasons for declaring martial law when he appeared before the Constitutional Court. His presence did little to help him, and South Korean investigators attempted to indict the president.
