House Democrats on Thursday introduced legislation designed to protect taxpayer sensitive financial information from Elon Musk and his government efficiency team.
Sponsored by Sean Casten (D-Ill.) and Haley Stevens (D-Mich.). law It directly responds to the Trump administration's recent decision to grant access to the Treasury's broad payment system.
Democrats and other critics have beaten the move, and President Trump has raised questions about the conflict in his new role as the so-called government efficiency leader, unelected billionaire. He accused him of opening sensitive financial records. .
Critics say they're not sure how Musk and his team use access to information, but they're alarming that they've already compromised privacy protections that Americans have previously taken for granted. It's ringing.
“Why do Elon Musk and his minions need to access the names, Social Security numbers, addresses, dates of birth and bank account information of millions of Americans?” Hakeem, House Minority Leader. Jeffries (DN.Y.) was told by a reporter at the Capitol.
“Why does he need that information? What are they doing with it? And why are House Republicans not stopping them?”
Musk suggests that the government's vast payment system will be a central target in his cost-cutting campaign, not screening sufficiently for false or fraudulent spending. He requested access to confirm the system's processes approved by the Treasury last weekend.
The new Democrat bill would limit access to people with certain experiences, security clearances and other qualifying.
“The actions taken by Musk and his IT Goon are… very clearly illegal, but so far unprocessed, compromising the privacy and data security of millions of Americans. “It's,” Kasten said. “And if you want to understand how nervous we are all, how much Donald Trump has done to protect his tax returns from being published, even under a legitimate subpoena from the House of Representatives. Think about whether you worked hard.”
The law rarely offers the opportunity to vote in the House of Representatives, controlled by GOP leaders who support masks' actions as a necessary part of streamlining the government. But Democrat leaders hope to win the support of at least a few Republican lawmakers, highlighting the GOP division surrounding Trump's agenda in the process.
“I know my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are just as infuriated as we do, but they have to stay quiet from the fear of retaliation from the Maga militants,” said Senator Pete Aguilar. (D-Calif), Speaker, told reporters of the House Democrat Caucus. “We only need three Republicans with the courage of their beliefs to participate in the efforts to protect the American people from this extreme and illegal overdue.”
The new law is just part of a multifaceted push by Democrats to combat enforcement actions that oust the trunks from Trump in his first few weeks. They also vow to launch offensive communications campaigns and coordinate lawsuits with outside groups, including democratically-led states.
“This is all the deck-on approach on behalf of hardworking American taxpayers,” Jeffries said. “Law, litigation, mobilization, communication with the American people — that's what we're doing.”
In that effort, the Democratic leaders and rank and file members appear to be on the same page.
Also on Thursday, the Democratic Methods and Means Committee denounced Trump and Musk for pushing to access the federal payment system.
A few hours ago, members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) staged their own events, urging the party to launch various strategies to “dismiss” Musks. Without such efforts, they warned, that Musk would support the working class and destroy federal programs designed to transfer savings to tax cuts for businesses like Musk himself and wealthy people. I warned.
CPC Chairman, Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas), said:
Casar said CPC members are ready to withhold support for the House of Representatives' must-pass bill, such as in an effort to prevent government shutdowns next month if Republicans continue to carry out unconfirmed manipulation of Musk. I warned. The threat could be important as GOP leaders will need democratic support to pass federal spending bills through Congress this year.
“All my time in Congress, I've never seen Republicans pass the budgets on a Republican basis [by themselves]and they're always raw to Democrats for help,” Casar said.
“Well, we're not going to help Republicans steal Elon Musk's dollars. We're going to give Republicans who want Elon Musk to take charge of the entire federal government. We don't intend to help. We will allow Republicans to break the law, shred our constitution, help him make billions of dollars of wealth for himself. I don't intend to do that.”
