The archbishop of York has been the subject of rebellion by a considerable number of members of the Church of England's ruling organization after attempting to block his opening address.
A third of the members of the General Conference refused to give Stephen Cottrell their support by voting in support of the move or abstaining from the move to prevent his speech.
The lawsuit was intended to “send a message to the public” that his position could no longer be maintained, said Sam Margrave, who moved the move.
After the senior bishop called on Cottrell to quit again, he said it would be inappropriate for him to become “the major change that the church needs at this point.”
Helen Anne Hartley, Bishop of Newcastle, told BBC Radio 4's Today Program: “I think he's the wrong person. I think he's in a leadership position. You have to talk and take a walk. And I think he allowed it. [a priest accused of abuse] I think it's abomination to stay in the post. ”
But Warrington bishop Beverly Mason, who filed a complaint of sexual harassment against his fellow bishops, said he did not support Cottrell's request to leave.
in Letters to fellow meeting membersshe said: “I do not support such a call and would like to openly state that I will not arm or personalize this effort when pursuing good, transparent processes and structures that suit my purpose. I think so. Personal disadvantage.”
At his opening address at the start of the 5-day meeting of a tense five-day meeting, Cottrell admits he made a mistake and pledges to work to rebuild E's trust in C. did.
Until the next Archbishop of Canterbury was appointed, Cottrell, the de facto leader of E. C, said that he was “deeply disappointed by our failures” and that “we would not be able to prevent these failures from happening again.” We have decided to make the necessary changes.”
Cottrell took the unprecedented step of quitting as Archbishop of Canterbury in November and told Synod that he “doesn't honorable by standing.”
He added:
Wellby resigned as England's most senior clergy in November John Smith's Investigationa sadistic abuser of a young Christian man discovered that he was unable to take effective action. His departure brought E's C into danger.
Cottrell also faces repeated calls to stand aside for his suspicious failure in two cases. He is one of the priests who allegedly abused a woman, and another of the former Liverpool bishops who left his post last month after allegations of sexual misconduct emerged.
Over the past few weeks, the church “had seen the right level of scrutiny none of us have ever seen before, Cottrell said.
“We all, and I guarantee you must start with yourself and be subject to the proper process of accountability,” it sometimes says, “it's no longer appropriate for someone to serve public office. Sometimes criminal cases.”
My trust was broken and my confidence was eroding. “And I'm more sorry than I can say about this. I know a mistake has been made. I've made a mistake.”
The church must rebuild trust, apologize when things are wrong, make corrections, and seek help when necessary, Cottrell said.
