Jeremiah “Scooby” Williams’ NFL Journey Hits a Bump

Linebacker Jeremiah “Scooby” Williams, who went undrafted, saw his hopes of joining an NFL team briefly crushed when he failed a physical and had to leave the Vikings. Reports from The Athletic confirm this turn of events.

Williams gained attention after signing with the Vikings as a free agent following last month’s NFL draft, after spending the last two years at Texas A&M.

Initially, he celebrated the signing with joint posts on social media with the Aggies’ official accounts, but things took a turn when his name was absent from the Vikings’ minicamp roster that was released last week. It appears he never officially joined the team due to issues related to his physical condition, as noted by Sports Illustrated.

Injuries plagued Williams during his last two college seasons, which likely affected his draft prospects. His 2024 season was cut short after 11 games due to a torn meniscus that required offseason surgery. Additionally, he was limited to just seven games last year because of ankle problems.

When he was healthy, Williams delivered solid performances, racking up 132 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, and also contributing two sacks and two interceptions over his college career.

Statistically, in his most recent season, he recorded one sack, one interception, and four tackles for loss. According to The Athletic, he had received early-round grades at the start of the year, but his inability to stay on the field hindered his chances. Analyst Dane Brugler highlighted that while Williams may not display exceptional traits, his size, speed, and strength make him capable of filling a role in the NFL. However, he also expressed concern that Williams not reporting his injuries could be a significant hurdle in his professional journey.

Interestingly, the nickname “Scooby” stems from his high school days in Alabama. Williams told the Gainesville Sun that his friends dubbed him this because he often carried Scooby-Doo fruit snacks, which he enjoyed. He humorously remarked, “You become what you eat.”
