Capitol Police say former congressional aide ‘bypassed’ security in DC

The former aide to former US lawmaker Lori Chavez Deremar and the candidate for President Donald Trump's Labor Secretary, obstructed a security screening in the Congressional office building on Tuesday, the U.S. Capitol said.

“Around 4:08pm, a former council staff member with an active Congressional ID entered the cannon garage and bypassed the security screening. The former staff member left the building a few minutes later.”

Capitol Police said staff did not break into the cannon building, contrary to previous reports.

“Our agents interviewed former staff members and determined that they were not a threat,” the agency added. “The USCP's Office of Professional Responsibility will conduct a management investigation.”

Investigators pulled a video of a former staff member. The officer also showed the image of a bearded man, wearing a hoodie to a council aide when he was pulled out of the cannon garage and asked if they saw him.

Fox News Digital has contacted Chavez-Deremer.

Last month, in another security incident, a man armed with a gun passed through a checkpoint at the Capitol Visitor Center and took a tour of the building. The USCP noted that the magnetometer rang and officers conducted a secondary hand search, but the handgun was missed and the suspect was allowed inside. Police later found the man and arrested him.

Chavez Delemer, the daughter of a member of the Teamsters, resigned from her seat in January after being appointed by Trump to lead the Department of Labor.
