CNN voting analyst Harry Enten has discovered that support for Ukraine and its president has “slumped” since the start of the war after initial approval.
The war between Ukraine and Russia has reached its fourth year. President Donald Trump has criticized the US support for Ukraine under the Biden administration. It is reportedly Secretary of State Marco Rubio was sent to meet with Russian officials in anticipation of negotiations on a peace agreement.
“I remember… all the backyards in the United States with the Ukrainian flag are far fewer of those today, as Americans' opinions about Ukraine have changed dramatically.”
On Monday, Enten documented how Ukrainian support was spiked in 2022, but has since dropped significantly. When the war began, only 7% of Americans said the US was providing too much support to Ukraine, but three years later, 41% agreed to the statement.
“St. Toledo, look at his trendlines!” Enten said. “The majority of Republicans, and of course, Republicans, are currently in charge of the US government, but 62% of Republicans say the US has too much support for Ukraine.”
Americans also have less faith in Ukrainian King Voldimir Zelenki's president, according to a vote reviewed by Enten. Pew Polling shows that 72% of respondents say they are confident that Zelenskyy will make the right decision in the world at the beginning of the war. That percentage plunged to 48% two years later.
That faith is low among Republicans. 67% of Republicans were confident in the president at the start of the war, but only the same 34% said two years later.
During his campaign, Trump promised that he could negotiate a peace between Ukraine and Russia. He threatened to pressure Russia to surrender to Russia if it did not reach a deal.

“What a difference it was from just three years ago,” Enten told Berman. “John, all the backyards in the US with the Ukrainian flag, much less of those today, as Americans have changed dramatically in their opinion on Ukraine.”
