A federal judge in New Mexico sentenced a Salvador woman to prison after violently assaulting a Border Patrol agent last year. The incident took place in May 2024 along the state's border with Mexico.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Mexico said a federal judge sentenced 27-year-old Erica Jasmine Lobato Melendez to 12 months and a day after being found guilty of assaulting a US Border Patrol agent. I reported it. On May 29, 2024, Lobato Melendez crossed the border from Mexico to New Mexico along with four other groups of immigrants.
Walters Rosser, the chief patrol agent for the El Paso Sector, posted a statement to X from the US Lawyer's Office.
When the agent tried to detain a Salvador woman, she became “stubborn” and refused to follow the orders to enter the agent's vehicle. She then had to grab the boundary wall and wrestletter.
Lobato 0 Melendez bit the agent's forearm as the agent tried to pull her away from the wall. The attack caused bruises, swelling and scuffs, the US lawyers' office said. The agent took her to the ground and she continued the fight.
While on the ground, she tried to bite the agent's leg and kicked him.
Upon completion of her sentence, the Salvadora woman will be placed on a two-year supervised release, and will be subject to deportation proceedings.
The attack on the agents was investigated by the FBI and the US Border Patrol.
