TikTok lays off trust and safety staffers as future remains in limbo: report

Tiktok reportedly cut global trust and safety teams as part of the restructuring, despite the Chinese-owned company fighting to stay online in the US.

Adam Presser, who heads Tiktok's Operation & Trust and Safety Division, notified staff about the shakeup in a memo on Thursday. Reuters reportedcite sources familiar with this issue.

Layoffs have already begun for employees based in Europe, Central and Africa.

It is unclear whether the number of US employees will be part of the overall cuts.

The company says it has “more than 40,000 trust and safety experts around the world.”

Tiktok did not immediately return a request for comment on the reorganization.

Tiktok and its CEO Shou Zi Chew repeatedly touted the role of trust and safety teams in their failed efforts to convince Congress that the app is not a national security threat.

At a well-known Senate hearing last January, Chu claimed that the closely-held company would spend more than $2 billion on efforts to protect US users.

With over 170 million American users, Tiktok's future remains in scope.

Congress last year passed a law requiring that Tiktok's China-based parent breasts would sell their investments in the app or face a complete US ban due to national security concerns.

The app temporarily shut down in January after the ordinance missed deadlines, but after Trump issued an executive order delaying enforcement of the law while working to find American buyers, I was given a reprieve.

After temporarily suspending Tiktok downloads, Apple and Google restored access in their app store after US Attorney General Pam Bondi provided assurance that they would not face penalties.

Trump's order expires in April, but the president has raised the possibility of extending the deadline in some way.
