President Donald Trump on Monday approved an email sent by Elon Musk to federal workers on Friday afternoon via the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
“We have people who don't show up at work and no one even knows if they're working for the government, so I thought it was great. By asking questions, I told them, “Tell me what you did this week.” Please” What he's doing is saying, “Are you actually working?” And if you don't answer, you're fired like you're semi-fireed, or you're fired because you haven't answered because there aren't many people,” Trump said at a press conference.
He added: We send letters to people because we are trying to find out if people are working. “Please tell me what you did last week.” If people don't respond, it's very possible that there are no such people or they're not working. ”
However, there was still a lot of confusion about whether or not to respond to emails as the ET ET deadline approached.
Musk first announced Friday at 2:46pm ET (ET) that “a failure to respond will be considered a resignation.”
He posted to X:
In line with @RealdonaldTrump's instructions, all federal employees will soon receive an email requesting they understand what they did last week. Failure to respond is considered a resignation.
According to electronic sources, the email immediately caused panic across the federal workforce. Federal employees go crazy. ”
The email also caused confusion after some supervisors from some agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Health and Human Services, told employees not to respond to emails immediately.
There was even more confusion after some officials from some agencies told employees not to respond.
For example, Secretary of State for management Tibor Najee told employees in a statement that they had no obligation to respond.
FBI Director Kash Patel then told employees in a statement: “Please pause your response.” Later, under the Secretary of Defense for Staff and Preparation, Darrin Selnick told employees as well, “Please pause your response.”
On Monday morning, some agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, told employees that emails were “valid.”
Asked about “disconnection of communication,” Trump said, “No, no, no. And it was done in a friendly way. Perhaps it was a State Department Marco, who they have very sensitive stuff, Just the FBI and the like, they're working on secret things. And they don't mean fighting Elon in any way. They really want to tell them what they're doing last week. I'm just saying there are people who don't. But other than that, I think everyone thought it was a pretty original idea.”
He once again approved the email. “Where are these people, who are they? And we thought if you didn't respond, you weren't around and you weren't paid anymore. So you know I'm, we're doing real work. And we think the votes just came out, Harvard polls say what we're doing is very popular. .”
