Today is a big day for the future President Trumpagenda. speaker Mike Johnson (r-la.) Despite a great backlash from Republicans, I am desperately hoping to pass today's budget resolution.
Reminder: Budget resolution is basically a placeholder invoice for rolling the ball.
Voting is actually happening today: “There may be votes tonight. Maybe there won't,” Johnson said. He told reporters this morning. “Look forward to it.” 🤔
Where the votes stand:
- no: manager Warren Davidson (r-ohio)
-
no:rep. Victoria Spartz (r-ind.)
- no:rep. Tim Burchett (r-tenn.)
-
no
:rep. Thomas Massey (r-ky.)
On the fence: Some more are signaling resistance behind the scenes, Hill reports.
^ Reminder: The bill fails if multiple of these Republicans vote “No.”
Why pushback:
- on the right: Some right-wing conservatives are worried about the deficit and debt when handing over this massive package.
-
In the middle: Some GOP moderates are worried about potential reductions in social safety net programs (such as Medicaid).
- on the left: Democrats are expected to oppose Trump's agenda and vote “no” all at once.
This is Johnson's main test: Johnson was given a tough situation. He has a thin margin of paper, temporarily exacerbated by open seats for Republicans who left to join the Trump administration. He was able to enclose a Caucus, a priority that competes primarily with strong personalities, but this is his biggest test.
Johnson literally called for prayers when he was about to pass this bill.
Has Trump corrupted the Republican Party?: Not so… Trump was pretty much out of the debate. Last week he made headlines in favor of the House plan for the Senate's competing strategy. Look out to see if Trump will step in at any time.
