Yankees’ Scott Effross injured on first pitch of spring outing

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Scott Ephelos has come a long way from Tommy John and Bucktuckling, but this spring he was feeling good and healthy.

It came to a screeching halt Tuesday as the Yankees reliever injured his hamstring on the first pitch of his outing against twins at Hammond Stadium before walking off the mound with his trainer.

“I just grabbed him there,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Hopefully he did a lot of good work to get to this point, so it's not something that holds him back too long. I know.”

Effross (31) may be heading for a test to determine the severity of the hamstring damage and how far he will be separated.

Side Armor had surgery at UCL in October 2022 and microdistracted lumbar vertebrae in December 2023, just a few months after the Yankees acquired him from the Cubs.

Effross returned to the big leagues only three games last September, but this winter was his first normal offseason since 2021-2022.

He and the Yankees were encouraged by how he was pitching early in the camp, but that is now on hold.
