Princeton murder suspect Matthew Hertgen appears for first time in suicide smock after allegedly killing, mutilating his brother

The preppy Princeton man accused of killing and mutilating his brother appeared in court on Thursday wearing a blue anti-suisanoside smock as he faced a judge for the first time since a heinous crime.

Matthew Hartgen, 31, said nothing during a brief video conference hearing. Meanwhile, his defense attorney sought a one-week delay to prepare and review the findings.

Judge Amber Gibbs agreed and set the next in-person court date, March 6, in Mercer County Superior Court.

Defence counsel Jason Matie is also planning to meet his client in prison on March 4th.

Hertgen was charged with murder in a horrifying Saturday night murder, where he allegedly beat his brother Joseph Hertgen, stabbed him, and died from a golf club and knife.

He then tore his brother's eyeballs, ate it, and set the family cat on fire, police sources said.

If convicted, he will face 30 years of life in prison.
