Karine Jean-Pierre recalls when Democrats rallied to oust Joe Biden from race

Former White House press secretary, Carine Jean Pierre, spoke about how “shocking” it was to see a Democratic leader criticize then-President Joe Biden to the point of resigning from the race.

A month after President Donald Trump's inauguration, Democrats are still caught up in the race of 2024. One of the most controversial aspects of the race was when the party leaders and influential figures demanded that Biden abandon the party's nomination after his disastrous debate performance last June.

At an event at Harvard University's Institute of Political Studies Jean Pierre was asked to share an anecdote about the challenges she faced three weeks after that discussion until Biden dropped out.

“He was the president of the United States at the time, and he was a Democratic leader. It was his decision to make what he wanted to do and I supported that 100%. Whatever that was, I was going to support that 100%,” she replied. “He was supposed to have been a Red Wave as a Democrat leader from a fairly successful mid-term, so there were no Red Waves.”

Karine Jean-Pierre, a former Biden administration spokeswoman, spoke about the challenges Biden faced weeks before he abandoned his party's nomination.

Jean Pierre's bristling when pushed by past “democracy” warnings: “Don't thank me for the twisting of my words.”

That big three-week challenge came from other parts of the Democrats themselves, she said.

“I…look, personally, I think the hardest thing to see in three weeks is that I've had a disconnect. [in] What was going on with the Democratic leadership, and as my former colleague, communications director Ben Laboldt, said, it really said it was the shooting squad. ”

“I had never seen anything like that before. I had never seen the party do it like they would, and it was hurtful and sad to see it happening,” Jean Pierre said. “Firing around people who believe I am a true patriot, people who think I have done everything I can for this country. As mentioned earlier, people I believe have done more terms than most presidents did historical things in two terms, and I was shocked to see what I was looking.”

When asked by another member of the panel, Jean Pierre confirmed that she was referring to the Democratic leaders who appeared to publicly criticize Beiden, pointing out how the turn of events was “shocking.”

“Instead of trying to come together to be truly united and understand how we're saving democracy, that's what I was seeing,” she said. “That's what we decided to do for three weeks. And I think you know, it was really, really unhappy and hurt us more than you think we could have done it.”
