Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelensky shot down the prospect of agreeing to an immediate ceasefire with Russia, despite his country being in the rear after three years of war with a much larger enemy.
Zelensky appears to have been strengthened by requesting a display of support from European leaders in London on Sunday.
“If we don't end the war and there's no security guarantee, then no one can control the ceasefire,” Zelensky said. I saidAccording to Financial Times.
The Ukrainian leaders argued that history of launching Russian invasions after agreeing to a previous ceasefire was certain that Kiev needed a meaningful deterrent before it could defeat its forces.
“For us, security assurance is the confidence that the same thing won't happen after this hot stage. [is over]He said.
US President Donald Trump has argued that previous agreements have been broken under “weak” presidents like Joe Biden and Barack Obama, and that the ceasefire is just the first step towards a broader, concrete deal between the two countries.
Zelensky said he was aware of plans that French President Macron was floating in a month-long ceasefire due to attacks on air, seas and energy infrastructure, but reportedly declined to comment on whether he could accept the proposal.
At a summit held in London on Sunday, British Prime Minister Kielstama and Macron said they would build a framework peace deal with Zelensky and present it to Washington after talks were destroyed between President Trump and the Ukrainian leader in the oval office on Friday.
However, the London Summit brought together dozens of leaders to discuss the role of Europe, and while they once again came to a conclusion, no other countries signed British and French plans for the Pan-European peacekeeping forces.
The Prime Minister said he was willing to commit British forces and planes on Ukraine's ground, but he said such forces would need US support.
Zelensky said on Sunday that he was ready to sign the contract, despite Zelensky leaving Washington over the weekend without signing the mineral investment agreement he traveled to the US.
However, it is unclear whether the offer is still standing. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent I said CBS said on Sunday that the contract was meant to be a stepping stone to a peace agreement and that it would be pointless for Zelensky to sign it if President Trump “wants a peace agreement” and “continue the fight.”
It is also unclear how stable Zelensky's position in Kiev will be for his return after a disastrous meeting with President Trump. Several European leaders and politicians have urged Zelensky to correct his relationship with the US president, but he insists he will not apologise to Trump.
