House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.) on Monday pushed back President Trump's claims that protest congressional Republicans have faced at City Hall recently.
“Another lie from these people out of control on another day. Donald Trump, Mike Johnson and Extreme Maga Republicans are allegedly claiming that Democrats are sending paid protesters to city hall meetings. What's wrong with y'all? What's wrong with y'all?” Jeffries said in a. Videos posted on x.
“We don't need to send paid protesters to your town hall meeting. Americans are with us,” he added. “Across the country, people are standing up to oppose attacks on the economy, attacks on hardworking families, attacks on democracy, attacks on Medicaid. We don't need paid protesters, peers, Americans with us.”
Republican lawmakers dealt with an angry crowd at the City Hall event during a break in the House, particularly about the Trump administration's efforts to cut thousands of government jobs.
Trump dismissed the protest on Monday, writing “on his true social platform that the 'troublemakers' who paid were attending the Republican town hall meeting. It's all part of the Democratic game, but like our big landslide elections, it won't work for them! ”
Last week, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) argued that recent City Hall protesters had been “paid” by Democrats.
“The town hall video was aimed at paid protesters in many of these locations,” Johnson told CNN's Kaitlan Collins. “These are Democrats who went to events early and filled their seats.”
Hill reached into the White House and Johnson offices for comments.
