California Democratic state legislator Rick Chavez Zbur (D-Hollywood) is in a hurry to amend a proposed bill that appears to make it illegal for homeowners to exercise self-defense against robbers in many circumstances.
Bill AB 1333 “excludes certain circumstances in which murder can justify, including defending residence or property. According to the bill's official summary, the bill further clarifies situations in which murder cannot be justified, including when a person uses more force than necessary to prevent danger.
The bill requires that homeowners “tire any reasonable means of escaping such dangers other than the use of forces that could cause death or serious bodily injury” before acting in self-defense using deadly forces.
Zbur dealt with critics in X's post. There he promised to amend the strange law.
Added a “Community Note” comment on Zbur's post.
“Rep. ZBUR introduced the bill when he explicitly intended to limit his right to protect their homes.”
Additionally, Kyle Rittenhouse did not “provoke” the violence that led to his August 2020 encounter, which shot and killed three people during a riot in Kenosha, Wisconsin. After the long trial, the ju judges acquitted Rittenhouse in all numbers and unanimously agreed that he had acted in self-defense.
Many ancient moral traditions recognize the right to use deadly force against robbery. Bible, Exodus 22, say Using lethal force against intruders is not considered murder.
