Ukrainian President Voldymi Zelensky said Tuesday that he was ready to come to the negotiation table to begin peace talks and expressed regret at last week's meeting at the White House, where he blew away the mineral trade between President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance and the Vice President and the US.
Zelensky wrote in X:
I would like to repeat Ukraine's commitment to peace.
No one wants an infinite war. Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiation table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. No one wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I are ready to work under President Trump's strong leadership.
It was very different from the final ten minutes of a meeting in an oval office with Trump, Vance and Russia and Ukraine, starting with the US Ukraine minerals contract and with ministers who worked to take on peace talks.
The meeting began friendly and lasted for about 40 minutes without issue, until a Polish reporter asked Trump about his “close” to Putin. Trump responded first, and after Vance jumped in with a response, Zelensky challenged Vance.
Zelensky issued a warning that the US “feels” if it doesn't provide safety to Ukraine, urging Trump to jump in. The debate quickly straddled the line, with Trump kicking Zelensky out of the White House with the intention of providing access to Ukraine's important minerals without the mineral trade.
Trump insisted that Zelensky was not ready to negotiate for peace.
In his post, Zelensky said, “We are ready to work quickly to end the war,” and laid out the first possible steps, including the release of prisoners and a ceasefire in the air and seas.
“Next, we want to work with the US to move through all the next phases very quickly and agree to a strong final deal,” added Zelensky.
He then expressed his gratitude to the United States, personally expressing Trump and regrets about how the oval office meeting went.
“We really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. And we remember the moment when President Trump offered Yablin to Ukraine, and we are grateful for this.
“Our meeting in Washington on Friday at the White House wasn't exactly what it should have been. It's a shame that it happened like this. It's time to get things right. I hope that future cooperation and communication will be constructive,” he said.
He said, “On the minerals and safety agreement,” and “Ukraine is always ready to sign any convenient form. We consider this agreement a step towards greater security and robust security assurances, and we really hope it works effectively.”
