University of California Davis placing men’s, women’s locker rooms with all-sex locker rooms

The University of California, Davis announced plans to convert the male and female locker rooms at the recreation center into a “universal” all-sex locker room, sparking outrage among women's rights activists.

The university announced a renovation project in February, claiming it had abolished the old locker room style with the aim of “inclusiveness.”

“We value an inclusive and accessible environment that caters to the diverse needs of our communities, the university said in its presentation.

“All campus recreational members can use our universal locker rooms regardless of who they are or how they identify. These spaces include members with disabilities and members of all gender identities.”

News of the change spread on Tuesday as two bills aimed at moving transgender athletes away from the sports of women and girls failed to pass Monday at the state and federal levels.

California women's rights activist Beth Bourne posted on X about the backlash from the Universal Locker Room and female students.

Women's tennis legend Martina Navratilova was called “Beyond f-up up.”

“This is beyond f—– Up! Be prepared to lose so many women in this insanity,” Nabratilova wrote.

Many other users expressed similar anger in their own posts.

The university expects to spend $5 million on renovations, and students will need to remove all their belongings from their current locker rooms until Wednesday.

The renovated locker rooms will not reopen until September.

The university's announcement claims that all toilets, changing rooms and cabanas are individual private spaces with floor-to-ceiling locking doors, which “provide more privacy to all members” compared to current formats.

On Tuesday, U.S. Senate Democrats voted in favor of protecting women and girls in sports laws that break the filibuster.

Republicans needed 60 votes, but only 51 votes.

The same day in Minnesota, the House of Representatives voted against the girls' sports law, which is preserved. All Democrats in the state voted against the law.
