GOP Rep. seemingly prods Trump with poll showing 70% of Americans blame Russia for war in Ukraine

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) explicitly swiped President Trump this week, noting that seven in 10 Americans have spoken to a recent survey in a recent survey that denounced Russia for the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“Absolutely, Americans know who is negligent. Moral clarity is important,” Bacon wrote on X Thursday morning.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that 70% of Americans opposed the statement that “Ukraine is responsible for starting a war.”

Over three-fifths of Republicans (62%) also said they rejected the idea, compared to 81% of Democrats.

Bacon is one of Ukraine's most outspoken House Republicans as Trump attempts to mediate a ceasefire between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Voldimir Zelensky.

Trump, 78, called 47-year-old Zelensky a “dictator,” and last month said he “should never launch” the Ukrainian war with Russia.

On Friday, Bacon gave a pointed reference about X to a Russian agent who has been addicted to then-Ukrain President Victor Yushchenko over 20 years ago.

“Russia is tired [sic] In 2004, he used poison to assassinate the president of Ukrainian. He survived, but was hurt. The war in Ukraine did not begin in 2022,” Nebraskan wrote.

On Wednesday, Bacon wrote: We also know that Ukraine wants democracy, a free market and the rule of law. We stand in right vs evil. Reagan, Churchill, Eisenhower…that's our heritage. I won't leave from that. ”

Trump had a major rift with Zelensky at the White House on February 28th, and has yet to fully repair his relationship with Ukraine.

Zelensky intends to come to Washington to sign a mineral contract with the US, gather profits for both countries, and establish a joint mineral fund that will provide economic “security guarantees” to Kiev.

Many Congressional Republicans sided with Trump by kicking Zelensky out of the White House, claiming the president was protecting American interests.

But Bacon responded to the explosion, saying it was a “bad day for American foreign policy.” Ukraine wants independence, the free market and the rule of law. It wants to be part of the West. Russia hates us and our Western values. We need to be clear about supporting freedom. ”

Reuters/Ipsos voting Bacon discovered that Americans have split into mineral ideas, with 50% opposed the statement “The US should gain a share of Ukrainian minerals” (including 75% of Democrats), with only 46% agreeing, including 73% of Republicans.

Trump does not call Putin a dictator, but he threatened to impose sanctions on Friday if the country does not stop Ukraine's attacks with missiles and “will not reach the table right now” to find peace.

Bacon's office did not respond immediately to inquiries from the post.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,174 US adults between March 3rd and 4th, 2025. The margin of error was positive or negative 3% in all adults and positive or negative 5% in all other groups.
