White House establishes FIFA 2026 World Cup task force

President Trump established the FIFA 2026 World Cup Task Force on Friday Presidential Orderdescribes the event as an opportunity to “introduce national pride and hospitality while promoting economic growth and tourism through sports.”

The sporting event will feature 104 matches in the United States, Canada and Mexico, named co-host countries.

This is the first World Cup in multiple countries in over 20 years, and Trump said on Friday that he would boost his involvement as all three countries are caught up in a tariff war.

“Tension is good,” the president told reporters on Friday in his oval office. “It's going to be even more exciting.”

He later said he wanted to participate in several games.

The President will chair the task force along with the Vice President, who will serve as vice-chairman. Along with the Attorney General, secretaries of the state, the Treasury, the Department of Defense, Transport, Homeland Security and Commerce will also be part of the committee.

Trump will appoint an executive director to oversee his day-to-day operations.

New York City is home to the final match, ending with a celebration at Times Square.

“We also talked about how FIFA will turn Times Square into Takeover Square over the final weekend of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“These are two incredible matches, featuring some of the best players in the world, and are a better way to celebrate than New York City's historic Times Square.”
