President Donald Trump, destroying Day in his speech to Congress on Tuesday night, declared that America was “unwakeable,” and perhaps the readjustment in the fashion industry has been shown to be similarly shown by its cultural change.
What once dominated by progressive and socially conscious minimalism seems to have part of the industry leaning towards a more luxurious side, turning away from the ideal of “awakening” while embracing luxury and decadence. New York Times Opinion Piece Released on Wednesday.
Fashion journalist Amy Odell speculates that the industry may have “give up” to be “awakening”, and the change reflects a wider cultural shift, including broader political views.

“For the past decade, fashion has been trying to be socially and environmentally conscious…but while many people, especially the creative side of fashion, have been integral to sharing progressive values, making the world a more diverse, equitable, inclusive and sustainable place.
“It looks like it's all over now, but that might be fine,” he read in part the piece.
Conservative women, who once stood by fashion, are now receiving recognition from some designers, Odell added.
For example, LVMH, the parent company of designer brands Dior and Givenchy, has created two couture looks for Ivanka Trump during his father's inauguration, showing his willingness to work with people outside of the progressive realm.

Odell also pointed out that she boasts a long history of dressing the first women of Oscar de la Renta (such as Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton).
It is a stark contrast to the “litmus test” for the conservative-enabled fashion industry, and when multiple designer brands refused to dress First Lady Melania Trump for their first Trump inauguration, she went on to say she would dress Mrs. Trump in 2016.

At the same time, Vogue's support for former vice president Kamala Harris is said to have been flattered, including interviews from some of her supporters and one issue, including a cover called “the candidate of our time.”
“It's hard to argue that Vogue Magazine and its editor Anna Wintour's approval of Kamala Harris was a move of the needle for anyone last year.
