Malibu, California, was burned by the Franklin fire in December and the Palisades fire in January, suffering a 4.1 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, and appears to be facing a series of similar small earthquakes in the future.
Los Angeles Times It has been reported:
The magnitude 4.1 earthquake on Sunday near Malibu is part of a bigger earthquake Patterns seen in Southern California.
The area has experienced many medium earthquakes since 2024. All of 2024, Southern California experienced 15 earthquake sequences in at least one earthquake of magnitude 4 or higher, according to counts by seismologist Lucy Jones, a research associate at Karistec. This is the highest annual total in the last 65 years, exceeding the 13 seen in 1988.
…
In the Malibu region, three earthquakes have been seen above magnitude 4 in the last 13 months.
Earthquakes are notoriously difficult to predict, and there is no sense of when the next major earthquake will hit the area. Still, Sunday's tremor rattles nerves in the area already crushed by recent wildfires.
In 2018, the area was devastated by the Woolsey fire that swept through parts of the Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains.
The area is known for being home to many Hollywood celebrities, but fires are prone to the development of fire given the long dry summer seasons and heavy winter rainfalls, providing ample water for rapid brush growth.
