Rashida Tlaib Casts Lone Vote Against Bill Requiring Reports on Cartel Smuggling Tunnels Under Border

US lawmaker Rashida Tribe (D-MI) has voted solely for a bill that requires Congress to make an annual report on cross-border cartel smuggling tunnels. The bill, HR 495, passed the House on Monday with a 402-1 vote.

“I certainly thought everyone was going to vote for my bill tonight,” Rep. Eli Crane (R-Az) Posted Following the vote, about X. “The 402-1 is still pretty solid.”

Monday, House of Representatives vote Passes the underground border defense law (HR 495). The bill simply requires Congress from US Customs and Border Patrol on US Customs activities to create tunnels for drug and human smuggling and to prepare actions taken by the US to stop them.

“Since 1990, authorities have discovered over 140 tunnels that violated the border, and since 2008 there has been an 80% increase in tunnel activity,” Crane said on the home floor. “As cross-border criminal organizations continue to grow in both scale and refinement, illegal cross-border tunnels along the US southwest border represent an important and growing threat to national security.”

Democrat co-sponsor Lou Cholera (C-CA) also spoke about the bill, saying, “I think this bill is an important step in the right direction.”

No one opposed the bill. In a rare, bipartisan moment, 194 Democrats joined 208 Republicans by voting for the bill. The undervoting came as 10 Republicans and 19 Democrats waited for the vote. Tlaib casts only “Nay”.
