The EU announces countermeasures to Trump’s tariffs

The European Union announced its own measures on Wednesday, saying it will come into effect on April 1 after the Trump administration officially increased tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to 25%.

“The US is applying tariffs worth $28 billion, so we are responding with measures worth 26 billion euros ($28 billion),” European Commission's Ursula von der Reyen said in a statement.

The Commission will manage trade and commercial disputes on behalf of 27 member states.

“We remain open to negotiations at all times. We firmly believe that in a world full of geopolitical and economic uncertainty, it is not our common interest to burden tariffs on our economy,” von der Reyen said.

The committee also said not only will steel and aluminum products be attacked in return, but also textiles, leather products, household appliances, house tool plastics and wood.

Agricultural products such as poultry, beef, seafood, nuts, eggs, sugar and vegetables are also affected.
