Lutnick: Canada becoming US state 'best way' to merge economies

Commerce Secretary Howard Luttonick said Wednesday that Canada's becoming a US state was the “best way” to integrate the economies of both countries.

“The best way to really blend Canada and the US economy, the president said, is for Canada to become our 51st state. If they want to merge it, that's how you make it 51st.”

Lutonic's comments come amidst the recent tensions between the US and Canada over tariffs. On Tuesday, President Trump said he plans to raise planned steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada due to an additional charge for electricity from the Ontario government.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Tuesday that he would not proceed with the additional fees in the wake of the US-provided “olive branches” being offered on Thursday with Ludnick.

Trump had previously suggested that Canada should “become a 51st state,” but soon Northern neighbour Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Sunday that “Canada will never become a part of America in shape, shape or form.”

“But think about this a bit: Why are American cars made in Canada? … Those jobs should be in America. That's the president's idea, and that's what he says, and that's what he does,” Rutnick said Wednesday.

“So the key is that Canada has to work with us to truly integrate their economy. And, as the president said, they should consider the incredible advantage of being the 51st state of the United States. [America]He added.
