Democrats find themselves confused once again as the party tries to navigate the imminent shutdown.
All eyes were in Senate Democrats after House Republicans passed a continuing resolution almost along the party line on Tuesday. To bring the CR to the floor, the Senate must first clear a procedural vote called Cloture.
The GOP holds 53 seats, and Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul has already said he will vote for CR. This means that at least eight Democrats will need to vote to pass the bill if they want to cross the aisle and avoid closure. Until yesterday, Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman was the only Democrat who said he would vote in favor of CR.
“The CR bill is very bad, but the possibility of a shutdown will affect America much worse.”
At the same time, the CR is studded with anomalies that Democrats opposed, including additional funds for the ice and cutting community projects.
This leaves Democrats with the seemingly impossible choice to fund the government with President Donald Trump's fundraising bill or shut it down completely. While Republicans are relatively united, the challenge is actively destroying Democrats.
Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) was the first signal that he was supporting the closure and that many other Democrats were joining him and delving into the heels. However, since then, Schumer announced on Thursday evening that he would vote in his favour of CR and send Democrats to frenzy.
“That's not a really decision. It's Hobson's choice,” Schumer said. I said With a floor speech. “We're going ahead with the bill or risk Donald Trump putting America in rows into the turmoil of shutdown. This is not an option in my opinion. The CR bill is a very bad thing, but the possibility of a shutdown has an impact on America that is far worse.”
President Trump later thanked Schumer on social media for showing “courage” and pledging to support CR.

The famous Democrat soon began to tear at Schumer following his reversal. Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) called his decision “betrayal,” and minority leader Hakem Jeffries (DN.Y.) also expressed strong opposition without explicitly naming Schumer.
Several reports suggest that Democrats will support their main opponents to separate Schumer after the stunt.
“We have members of Congress who have won Trump-owned districts in some of the most difficult territory in the United States. Democrats in the House and Senate have originally devised alternative funding bills that would extend the funds for 30 days and allow them to theoretically create CRs that they can support. That being said, this strategy was a tough sell for Democrats as they are in the minority in both the House and Senate.
Still, Schumer's surrender was an outlier for Democrats. Some Senator They insist that they will not become caves like their leader did. Some reports are even suggestion The Democrats will support their main enemy, perhaps even the AOC, to separate Schumer after his stunts.
So, while Democrats in the House and Senate had disappeared, Schumer was keen to avoid closing. We need to wait to see if someone else bends their knees.
