The islanders knew this was coming. Mike Riley knew this was coming. Still, when it was revealed on Sunday morning that Riley would play later that night, the difference between knowing and seeing was too obvious.
“It feels like they didn't believe it for a moment,” Riley said.
This is the moment when Riley spent four months and has since worked on some of his work. He stood up to it, and some skated at 14:16 and scored assists in a comeback 4-2 islander victory over the Panthers at UBS Arena, bringing the club to a huge boost in the playoff race.
“It would have been tough for me to do that,” Anders Lee said. “Throwing into the mix, he took that amount of time, he didn't even get a conditioning stint.
“He's just going in and has a good hockey game. He throws a 150-foot pass. [to Maxim Tsyplakov] Tie it to the tape. It's merely a testament to the work he put in to prepare for tonight. ”
Reilly's whole world was thrown for the loop in mid-November. He developed an abnormality in his heart that required immediate attention when he tested while recovering from a concussion. This issue never threatened his career, but it was not easy to deal with.
Riley was allowed to play about a week before the islanders were in California, but there was no reason the club wouldn't spend time with nine defensemen on the roster. However, he suffered an injury to Adam Perek's leg on Friday night, which he kept him out on Sunday, but gave Riley a natural opening.
“I thought it would be there a bit soon,” Riley said. “I didn't know when.”

He learned on Sunday morning he actually replaced Perek in the lineup and skated in a third pair with Scott Mayfield, and Ryan Prock moved and took a picture of Perek's spot with Noah Dobson.
“I was clearly excited,” Riley said. “It was clearly a long time, so there was a lot of work on it in hopes of coming back this season. Obviously, I'm excited to be back with the guys here. I'm ready to go tonight.”
On a Sunday night he was excellent.
“I think he's decided. He's very determined to play,” coach Patrick Roy said. “That's the first thing. I don't know how it feels to have what he had, but what I mean is that he was determined to play well. He wanted that. He cares. I think good things will happen in these situations.”
Adam Boqvist (upper body) skated on Sunday in an orange contactless jersey.
