Minnesota Debating Anti-Sanctuary Bill to Aid Deportations

The Minnesota Legislature is discussing a bill that requires local governments to report violent criminal illegal immigrants to federal officials and preempt local rules to prevent cooperation between ice and deportation efforts.

bill(HF16) Hearing last week in the state House Public Safety, Finance and Policy Committee, supporters said the bill “small focus” solely on immigrants arrested for violent criminal offences, not merely illegal but law-abiding immigrants.

HF16 requires federal immigration authorities to report illegal immigrants from local or state law enforcement systems suspected of murder, assault, domestic assault, gangs, robbery, carjacking, tricking, or criminal sexual conduct.

The bill also preempts local ordinances or regulations that prevent police and courts from reporting criminal offences to ice.

“I think what this bill will ultimately achieve is creating a cross-local government pathway to report violent offenders who are illegal immigrants to federal authorities,” said Max Reimer, a bill sponsored Republican.

So far, the bill has been approved by the committee and has been sent to the House Election Finance and Government Steering Committee, the House reports on official legislation Website.

Victim Charles Sayer testified about the passage of the bill at the March 12 hearing. Sayer said the man who killed his mother had been convicted of domestic violence since he tried to stab his ex-girlfriend.

“The only question I really left is that everyone on every side has a problem reporting dangerous offenders to the ice.

A letter signed by 35 Minnesotans, who were victims of crime, at the hands of violent crime offences, was also presented during the discussion.

State Democrats are steadfast against such reforms, and the bill was handed over by the committee in line with party lines.

Earlier this year, several Democrats filed a controversy by posting videos in multiple languages, informing them how immigrants can avoid the ice, and avoiding grabs by federal immigration officials.
