Harvard now offering free tuition to nearly all Americans

Harvard University has announced that it will offer free tuition fees to students whose families earn under $200,000 a year.

“Bringing Harvard financially for more individuals broadens the array of background, experiences and perspectives that all students encounter and promotes intellectual and personal growth,” Harvard President Alan M. Gerber said in a statement Monday.

“Learning outstanding promised people together and learning from one another, we truly realize the incredible potential of university.”

Ivy League University added that students from families under $100,000 per year are eligible for free housing, food and health services in addition to the tuition fees covered at the school.

The university said the move is to “ensure that hospitalized students can afford Harvard education.”

“Paying for college is a huge concern for many families and we know that providing Harvard education and the opportunities that come with it will be possible for more students than ever before.”

I-Vt. Sen. Bernie Sanders of the company commented on the announcement, saying more schools need to follow Harvard's moves.

“Ten years ago, when I introduced a bill to make public universities and universities tuition-free, it was called “Radical.” Today, over 100 universities offer free tuition fees to working-class students,” Sanders wrote in X's post.

“Now we have to expand that idea to all public universities and universities.”

The expanded program will allow approximately 86% of U.S. families to qualify for Harvard financial aid, the school announced, adding that it has expanded its “commitment to providing all undergraduate students with the resources they need to enroll and graduate.”

Additionally, students from families with incomes of more than $200,000 per year are eligible for financial aid.

The average annual tuition fee for Harvard students is $56,550, while rooms, board of directors and health services cost around $83,000.

“We know that the most talented students come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds and experiences in every state and around the world,” said William R. Fitzsimmons, dean of admissions and financial aid at Harvard University. “Our financial aid is important to ensure that these students are a place where Harvard University can become part of a vibrant learning community that has been enhanced by their presence and participation.”

Harvard added that since launching the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative in 2004, it has awarded more than $3.6 billion in undergraduate financial aid.
