Two illegal immigrants are on the run after fleeing Colorado detention facilities during a power outage, according to the US Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Joel Jose Gonzalez Gonzalez, 32, and 24-year-old Gairondo Vido Romero fled the Denver Contract Detention Facility in Aurora late Tuesday when the ice facility was hit by a sudden halt, FED said.
Authorities noticed the pair was missing throughout the daily facilities throughout the facility, Ice said.
“The local government was notified immediately and refused to assist in the search,” an ICE spokesman said in a statement. “ICE has also notified additional state and federal law enforcement partners. Foreigners are still large and searches are ongoing.”
However, Aurora police claim that they were not notified of the fugitive immigrants until hours later.
“This has been a cold event since we were notified,” a police spokesman said.
“We received a late notification about the incident and found out that the event happened a few hours ago when we responded. The Aurora Police Department can be used to assist our federal partners in an active public safety emergency.”
“As city law enforcement, we do not enforce federal immigration laws and cannot participate in large-scale searches or follow-ups,” they added.
Vido-Romero, the youngest fugitive, was taken to ice last month after being arrested on local charges at Castle Rock. 9News reported.
The immigrants who illegally entered the United States via Eagle Pass, Texas in December 2023 were awaiting deportation to his hometown of Venezuela.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez Gonzalez entered the United States in February 2013 via El Paso, Texas. He was arrested by the Fed last month after being detained by authorities at the Adams County Jail in Brighton on local charges.
He was detained in an ice facility due to immigration procedures being held on hold.
