A State Department spokesperson said Thursday that Ukraine and Russia will “exhale from a complete ceasefire” after three years of war.
“We exhale from a complete ceasefire, and not just for a week or six months, but the people of Ukraine and Russia can talk about the lasting peace that people around the world can rely on.
On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodimia Zelensky supported the push from President Trump due to a limited ceasefire with Russia.
“One of the first steps to end the war completely is to end strikes against energy and other civil infrastructure. I supported this step and made sure Ukraine is ready to implement it,” Zelensky told Social Platform X.
“We believe that such steps are necessary to create the possibility that a comprehensive peace agreement will be prepared during a ceasefire.”
The US had previously proposed that Ukrainians and Russians would suspend attacks on energy facilities and infrastructure as a first step towards a massive peace deal. President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone for several hours on Tuesday, while Zelensky and Trump spoke on Wednesday.
Since the president took office in January, the Trump administration has set out on a mission to end the Russian-Ukraine war, which passed the three-year mark last month.
“We never came close to peace with these two parties,” Bruce said Thursday.
