President Donald Trump has issued a historic executive order that abolished the Department of Education, a promise he made during the 2024 presidential election.
Democrats were vehemently opposed efforts by some Republicans to shut down EDs based on the fact that the institution is effective and costly for taxpayers.
“Closening the Ministry of Education gives children and their families an opportunity to escape a system of failure.”
Trump signed the order at a ceremony at the White House on Thursday.
“Today, we are taking 45 years of very historic actions,” the president said. “After a while, I will sign an executive order to begin eliminating the Federal Department of Education.”
The audience cried out loud at the announcement.
“45 years later, the US is spending much more money on education than any other country, and likewise, much more money on each student. “Closening the Department of Education gives children and their families an opportunity to escape a system of failure.”
Democrats are opposed to the proposal to close the agency by claiming that the president does not have the authority to unilaterally close the departments held by Congressional votes. A group of attorney generals in 20 states have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming that the lawsuit will deprive students of quality education.
“Destroying the department will also end the after-school program,” the lawsuit states. “Regardless of what alternative resources are placed on behalf of the Ministry of Education, the process of demolition of the department created and created confusion, confusion, uncertainty, delays and confusion among the plaintiffs' state and its residents.”
President's advocates say the agency has failed its mission to improve education based on national testing, which has shown worsening results for decades.
As part of the ceremony, the children sat at school desks on both sides of the president. Before he could sign, Trump turned to the two students and asked, “Should I do that?”
They each nodded with approval.
