Two illegal aliens were destroyed from the Colorado detention center on Tuesday, according to immigration and customs enforcement. The escape reportedly was the result of a power outage at the facility, and the backdoor was unlocked.
Joel Jose Gonzalez Gonzalez, 32, and 24-year-old Gairondo Vido Romero reportedly fled from Denver Contract Detention Facility in Aurora after 2pm on Tuesday.
“If they were held in criminal detainees, we could get involved and start putting together the fugitives.”
Aurora City Councilman Daniel Julinski said KDVR The ice detention center experienced a power outage around 9:30pm, and the door heading to the soccer facility was unlocked.
When the ice agents made an emergency count in the middle of the night, they soon realized that Gonzalez Gonzalez and Vidromero had clearly erupted.
ICE issued a statement on the case, claiming that local governments refused to support federal agencies in the ongoing Manhunt.
“Two detainees fled the US Immigration and Customs Denver Contract Detention Facility in Aurora, Colorado on March 18. Local authorities were immediately notified and refused to assist in the search.
The agency said Gonzalez Gonzalez entered the United States in February 2013 through the El Paso del Norte Entry Port in El Paso, Texas, but he violated the terms of entry. ICE issued a detainee request after being detained at the Adams County Jail in Brighton on local charges. On February 12, Ice arrested Gonzalez Gonzalez, postponing immigration proceedings and detaining him at the Aurora Detention Facility.
Vido-Romero reportedly entered the United States in December 2023 near El Paso, Texas. ICE issued detainees after being detained at the Douglas County Jail in Castle Rock on local charges. The immigration judge previously ordered his return to Venezuela. Ice hugged him in the detention centre as he waited for his deportation.
According to the Aurora Police Department, the man was not notified of the escape until about 2:30am on Wednesday.
“We received a late notice about the incident and when we responded, we learned that the event had happened a few hours ago,” the department told KDVR. “The Aurora Police Department is available to federal partners to help with active public safety emergencies. As a local government law enforcement agency, we are unable to enforce federal immigration laws and participate in large-scale searches and follow-ups.”
Aurora Police spokesman Joe Moylan said Fox News Digital The Aurora police are willing to “support anxiety” if the fugitive is still in the city.
“This has been a cold event since I was notified,” Moylan said. “We are working with our federal partners to determine if the escape has any connection to the city of Aurora. When the warrant is active and these men are confirmed to be in Aurora, we will support our anxiety.”
The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said they had not been notified of the detainees who fled. The Adams County Sheriff's Office said it had not received a request to assist ICE.
The Colorado Governor's Office told KDVR: “The state was asked to issue a 'watch-down' (borrow) notice to law enforcement and sent a standard notice. ICE is not seeking additional support from the state.
Julinski told the news outlet that Aurora officials had made a “big attack” on Ice's claim that he refused to help Manhunt.
“The people of Aurora have a state law here that will replace the jurisdiction of the Aurora Police Department, and Ice knows that,” Julinski said. “To say we refused to be involved is not a fair statement. This is completely on the ice.”
“We take great pride in our progress towards returning to fighting crime in the city, starting with Todd Chamberlain, the police chief we hired,” she added.
Julinski pointed out that Ice has not made clear whether the two illegal aliens are being held by civil or criminal detainees.
“From what I understand, they are not held by criminal detainees,” she said. “If they were held in criminal detainees, we could get involved and start putting together the fugitives.”
Blaze News contacted ICE about its response to Jurinsky and local government claims. However, the agency did not respond to any particular questions and provided only the same statement previously issued.
“The aliens are still massive and the search is ongoing,” Ice said.
