Republicans should build a wall around the welfare state

Congress is rushing towards a huge showdown over the federal budget. The House Budget blueprint directed the Energy and Commercial Committee to find a $880 billion reduction in spending that requires Medicaid reform. However, some Republicans Like Senator Josh Hawley (Missouri) I disagree “Whatever will result in a reduction in beneficiaries of actual work.”

Even President Trump said that Medicaid is not impressed. But without cuts, Congress would not be able to continue the Trump tax cuts enacted in 2017.

Before any of this can happen, the Senate must first agree to a resolution in the House budget, with both rooms settling the difference. That's where politics gets complicated. But politics can be simple. It focuses on excluding non-citizens from welfare programs.

Non-citizens include illegal immigrants, legal green card immigrants, and other immigrants with regard to work permits or other visas. The $880 billion cut appeal is not specific to Medicaid or other welfare program components. This number is just a target that the Energy and Commerce Committee needs to hit. The committee was able to ease this goal and Holy worries by reducing all non-citizens from Medicaid and other welfare and qualification programs.

Non-citizens don't use Medicaid much, but what should you not use. Our recent the study Announcing at the Cato Institute found that noncitizens spend about $2,100 a year in Medicaid, over 16% of the $2,500 consumed by Americans born each year.

In 2022, non-citizens received an estimated $50.3 billion in Medicaid benefits. Ideally, non-citizens should not receive Medicaid from state or federal funds, but states have their own state funds at their discretion. Our envelope calculations suggest that we will save about $355.9 billion over a decade by kicking all non-citizens from Medicaid.

Still, the Senate can go further Restrict all non-citizen access to other federal welfare programs. Non-citizens estimated they consumed about $59.8 billion in other welfare benefits in 2022. Removing non-citizens from not only Medicaid, but all welfare and qualification programs, could save around $1 trillion over the next decade.

Separating non-citizens from Medicare and Social Security can be politically difficult, so it may be best to start by separating them from the means-tested welfare. That simple move could save $461.2 billion over a decade.

To remove all non-citizens from the welfare role, the committee does not need to start from scratch. They can simply hire Rep. Glenn Grossman (r-wis.) Protection Act for Americans From the last assembly.

Immigrants Usually they pay more taxes than they consume in benefits.in part because they consume less welfare than the Americans they were born with. Kicking all non-citizens from welfare will further increase these financial benefits by reducing spending.

Immigration also has a positive economic impact beyond government budgets.US populationIt will begin to decline in the mid-2030s without immigration. Other economic benefits of immigrants are huge, from the larger economy to world-class and world-class businesses started by immigrants such as Jensen Fan and Elon Musk.

The House budget blueprint supports spending an extraordinary $200 billion on border security and enforcement of internal immigration over the next decade. Such a move is financially irresponsible and has little impact on border security as the number of border encounters fell sharply last year. Instead of being distracted by the Phantom border issue, Congress should build walls aroundNot nationwide, but welfare state.
