Cain Velasquez sentenced: Ex-UFC star gets prison time for 2022 shooting

Former UFC star Cain Velazquez was sentenced to five years in prison on Monday after not giving a contest to his role in the 2022 shooting in California.

Velazquez receives 1,283 days as credits for the time provided, which will be about three years. To KTVU. He will serve in prison for another year and a half.

He shared some regrets about the shooting before the judge told him his sentence.

“I agree to accept any sentences,” he said. “Moving forward, I'm going to set a great example for everyone. Of all of this, I wish my family and community a safe feeling.”

The former champion refused to argue against felony assault and gun charges as part of a negotiation agreement with the Santa Clara County Prosecutor's Office, District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in August. The planned murder charges against Velázquez were dropped as part of the deal.

Velazquez was arrested in February 2022 on attempted murder and multiple gun charges after police said they had shot a pick-up by carrying a man who allegedly sexually assaulting his 4-year-old son. The man was later identified as Harry Golart.

Prosecutors said Velazquez chased a pickup truck carrying the man through busy streets in the San Jose area. Officials said the pursuit would last for around 11 miles.

The former mixed martial artist injured the man's stepfather in the incident, officials said.

Velazquez won his first UFC Heavyweight Championship in 2012, beating Junior Dos Santos. Velazquez managed to defend the title twice.
