According to a video posted from the scene, hundreds of Gazans marched through Beit Rahiya in the north town, where they were holding white flags and chanting anti-Hamas slogans.
In a rare public uprising against Gaza's Hamas rule, demonstrators took them to the streets outside Indonesian hospitals in northern Gaza. Footage shared on social media on Tuesday captured a crowd of protesters demanding an end to what is called the “tyrant rules.” And then we echo the streets, “We want to live!”
The protesters also waving white flags, reading “Stop the war” and “We refuse to become dying people,” and marched in what was called the “Intifada of the North.”
A protesting speaker said, “We are people of peace. We demand safe peace from this town… we will become the ones who decide who is in control.”
Video commentary urged protesters to media to report on the event. “Where is the media?” cried out, claiming that journalists had retreated to the hospital rather than documenting the scene. Another protester said people are demanding people's freedom and the release of hostages to end the suffering of Gaza.
Videos reportedly appeared later, indicating that protests erupted in southern Gaza as well.
The scene marked one of Hamas' biggest and most open protests since the start of the war with Israel in October 2023.
Historically, Hamas has responded to anti-government protests with swift and often violent crackdowns. The Iran-backed terrorist group that seized control of Gaza in 2007 has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the US and the European Union.
However, this latest protest shows that despair is rising among ordinary Gazan. As one protester questioned, “How can we remain immobilized when we are dead and bleeding?”
Gaza unrest appears as Israel strengthens its efforts to dismantle Hamas leaders following the October 7 massacre, the deadliest terrorist attack in Israeli history, as it deepens its instability in coastal enclaves.
Over the past week, the Israeli military has It has been eliminated Several senior Hamas officials rapidly in succession expose fractures within the group's internal governance and force the operative into survival mode.
Meanwhile, President Trump's new vision for Gaza – accompanied by voluntary resettlement and economic revival – has gained traction in polls display More than half of Gazan have expressed their desire to leave.
The setting is set for future historic changes in the region as Hamas struggles to maintain control and protesters demand changes from within.
