Senate Republicans Introduce Bill to Eliminate Department of Education

Senate Republicans formally introduced a bill Wednesday to remove the Department of Education. This was introduced in line with President Donald Trump's executive order mandating the dismantling of the agency.

Minecround Senator (R-SD) has been reintroduced Returning education to our state lawHe first introduced it in November 2024. The bill will remove the Department of Education within a year of the bill's enactment and redistributing all important federal programs to other departments. The round said that abandoning the department's bloated bureaucracy will save about $2.2 billion a year in taxpayer dollars, allowing funds to flow directly to the state in the form of block grants.

“We all know that teachers, parents, local school boards and education departments know what's best for students, not for Washington bureaucrats,” Round I said In a statement. “The Department of Education was created to collect educational data and advise state and local organizations on best practices. Since then, it has grown into an oversized bureaucracy that determines all-purpose policies, standards and practices for students across the country.”

“Education returning to our state law will maintain important programs and federal funds while eliminating the bureaucracy of the Department of Education,” he continued. “This has been my priorities for years and is something that President Trump has shared. I look forward to working with the president, Secretary McMahon and other administrations to get this law across the finish line and bring education decisions back to the state and local levels they belong to.”

The law is coexisted by Senators Jim Banks (R-IN) and Tim Sheehee (R-MT).

“The average Ed bureaucrats earn twice as much as Indiana teachers, but our national test scores are close to historic lows. That money should be sent back to the state and empowered parents, teachers and local leaders.” I said In a statement. “Congress has a great opportunity to codify President Trump's enforcement actions. This bill does that. It's a victory for American education.”

“It's time to put students first, not bureaucracy,” added Sheehee. “We spend more on education than at any point in history, but our test scores are reduced as our test scores are wasted by the bloated federal bureaucracy. Closing the DOE eliminates the layer of red tape in Washington, DC, secures taxpayer money for education and supports children.

Shortly after her confirmation, the department announced that it would cut its workforce in half to streamline the department and reduce unnecessary bureaucracy.
