China announced measures on Friday, raising tariffs on US goods from 84% to 125% from Saturday.
The United States and China expanded the trade war by raising tariffs, even if US President Donald Trump suspends tariffs in other countries.
Trump's universal tariffs on China total 145%.
When Trump announced Wednesday that China faced 125% tariffs, he did not include a 20% tariff on China, which was tied to its role in fentanyl production.
“The US has become a number game to alternately raise unusually high tariffs in China, but it has no practical economic importance and is a joke in the history of the world economy,” a Commerce Department spokesman said in a statement announcing the measures.
“However, if the US insists that it will continue to effectively infringe on China's interests, China will resolutely refute and fight to the end.”
China's Commerce Department said it is filing another lawsuit with the World Trade Organization over US tariff hikes.
