US Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) has called for a meeting with President El Salvador Naive Buquere and has called for the return of Kilmer Armando Abrego Garcia. According to ICE officials, Abrego-Garcia, which was found to be a member of the MS-13 gang, was removed as a result of administrative errors. Van Hollen has promised to travel to El Salvador if Abrego Garcia is not returned.
in letter Van Hollen wrote to Salvador Ambassador Milena Mayorga: However, Kozak, a senior official at the US State Department’s Western Hemisphere Bureau, did not detail the measures taken to promote his return, as mandated by the Supreme Court.
In a statement about the requested meeting, the Maryland Democratic senator argued that “Garcia should never be accused of being accused of being accused by being accused by the court: the administration must now bring him home.”
Abrego Garcia remains at the heart of the debate. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the 29-year-old Salvador citizen has illegally entered the United States. Since his arrival, Abrego Garcia has been married to a US citizen, with three children and a US citizen.
In 2019, the federal government chose to launch deportation procedures against Abrego Garcia. Authorities fought to continue Abrego Garcia in detention during a bond redecision hearing that Abrego Garcia was about to release him from ice detention.
a Court filing In his current case, the administrative immigration judge’s hearing of Abrego Garcia’s original bond hearing ruled over his release, and the evidence presented showed him that he was a verified member of the criminal gang and was a flight risk. The Immigration Committee confirmed the on-appeal decision filed by Abrego Garcia’s attorneys.
According to the same filing documents, on October 10, 2019, an immigration judge ordered the removal of Abrego Garcia from the United States, but granted withholding tax for the removal to El Salvador. The protection grant banned his removal in El Salvador.
On March 12, 2025, Abrego-Garcia was arrested by immigrant and customs enforcement agents for his prominent role in the MS-13 gang. Within days of his arrest, Abrego Garcia was taken to the staging area for a removal flight to El Salvador, and although not the original manifesto, it was accidentally replaced by a flight, according to ice officials.
Upon arriving in El Salvador, Abrego Garcia was placed at the Centre for Terrorism Confinement (CECOT) in El Salvador.
Abrego Garcia’s lawyers have filed a federal lawsuit demanding that Abrego Garcia return to the United States. Federal District Judge Paula Sinis ordered Abrego Garcia to return to the United States with an April 7 deadline.th The circuit refused to suspend the return order as the appeal continued.
US Supreme Court, Unsigned decisionordered the Trump administration to “promote” the return of Abrego Garcia. At a White House press conference on Monday, reporters asked Salvadora President Naive Buquere if they would return Abrego Garcia at court’s request. Bukel replied, “How can I do that? I cannot smuggle terrorists into the United States.”
Bukere’s reference to smuggling terrorists into the United States is likely a reference to the designation of the MS-13 gang as a foreign terrorist organization.
