David Villarobos, 66, was walking his dog in the 1100 block of West Collarton Street, Chicago, before 6am last Tuesday. WLS-TV reported.
Villalobos told the station that he soon noticed one of the men “putting a gun into the man’s head,” and he thought it was an ongoing carjack.
“It’s getting rough in Chicago.”
So, WLS reported that Villalobos and two men exchanged words, adding that one of the men told him.
The station said as gunmen quickly began firing.
But so did Villalobos, the hidden career. Police told WLS that they have valid firearm owner identification.
“He drew a weapon, and he shot,” Villarobos told the station. “And I moved as fast as I could. I returned the fire.”
Videos on the neighbor’s cell phone captured the suspect ducking behind a car during a shootout, WLS said. Police told the station they had escaped from the scene by entering the Lexus sedan they were waiting for. WLS added that Chopper 7 is over the abandoned Lexus scene about five miles west of North Lawndale.
It is not clear whether any of the two men were injured in the shootout. However, Villa Lobos crashed into his foot, the station said. He was then taken to hospital in good condition and released on the same day.
“It was a superficial wound,” he told WLS that he was showing reporters a bandage covering the place he was attacked.
“It’s getting worse again in the neighborhood,” Villa Lobos told the station. “It’s getting worse again.”
He also said he was reluctant to fire a gun.
“I’m thinking about going home. I’ll see my grandson, wife. That’s what I’m thinking. I’m not thinking about shooting a man. I was very hesitant to do that.
He also had a message to Democrat Mayor Brandon Johnson, but the station said, “You don’t have enough police.”
WLS added that no other injuries have been reported and that police said none of them were in custody, but three detectives from the area are investigating it.
