FSU shooting: 2 dead, 6 injured after gunman opens fire on Tallahassee campus

Two people were killed and six others were injured after police said a 20-year-old Florida State University (FSU) student fired fire on Thursday at the school’s Main Tallahassee campus.

Authorities identified the suspected shooter as Phoenix Echner, the son of a sheriff’s deputy.

Ichner was shot by police and taken to an area hospital. Police have not yet identified the victim in the shooting, but said the two killed were not FSU students.

FSU wrote to X just after 12pm that an active shooter was reported in the Student Union and instructed people on campus to evacuate. Classes were cancelled by the university until Friday, and athletic events in Tallahassee were cancelled until the weekend.

“Active Scene,” Florida State University shooter report, “Shell in Shell” order

The shelter notification was lifted shortly after 3pm when FSU notified the community that law enforcement had “neutralized” the threat.

” [FBI] It is located on the Florida scene and we are in contact with agents on the ground. Our priority is the safety of all involved. I’ll continue updating as I learn more. I pray for everyone,” Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote to X.

FBI Director Kash Patel said he was briefed on the situation, and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that the department was on the FSU site.

“The FBI is on the FSU site. I’m back from the LA office to DC, but I’m up to date with the airplane situation. I’ll update as I learn more,” Bongino wrote in X’s post.
