Mets’ Hayden Senger proves he should get more MLB chances

Francisco Alvarez is close.

Young catcher sat after playing back-to-back games on Thursday and is scheduled to catch games with Double A Binghamton on Friday and Saturday. He was then ready for his season debut.

“After he gets through these two days and see if he needs more at-bats and if he feels ready to go, we’ll have a conversation,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Thursday of Alvarez, who needed surgery to remove the bone of Hamate, which had broken his left hand last month.

With the arrival of Alvarez’s era, this major league opportunity will end for Hayden Senger. But this belief is that there are more opportunities in the future.

Senger is a 27-year-old rookie who has struggled in nine minor league seasons and was particularly defensively impressed in his first 11 games as a major leaguer.

He abandoned three of the five potential base steelers with arms that are clearly unparalleled in baseball.

Of the 64 catchers thrown into base this season, Senger’s average speed of 88.7 mph is the best in the game.

Back in his childhood, he knew he had always had talented arms.

He hone his gifts early in the 2020 pandemic.

Without the team, Senger worked in PRP baseball in Indiana and looked into all the equipment targeted at pitchers.

“It looks fun,” he thought, and he had some time in his hands.

“I’ve always had that top-notch speed,” Senger said.

With the first taste of the majors, Senger handled the pitchers well, owned strong framing and blocking numbers, and was a bit of a hit.

He left 22-5 (.227) double to prove his skilled banter.

A quality defensive catcher will find a niche in the game, even if they are not asked to do a lot offensively.

“It’s special to me to get a chance,” Senger said before supporting Lewis Torrence when the Mets beat the Cardinals 4-1 at Citifield. “It was an honor to be here with this team.

“I always thought I could catch in the big leagues. That was the hit part I always reserved, but now I feel I can give them. [quality at-bat] Right now. “

Jeff McNeill went 3-0 and started at center field alongside Low A. St. Lucy as the Mets searched for other options after the Mets fractured his tibia.

Recovering from diagonal tension, McNeill is expected to join either Binghamton or Triple a Syracuse on Saturday, with consecutive games in the infield.

Tyrone Taylor starts in the middle and Mendoza says he’ll get used to using former centre fielder Brandonnimo, who was pushed to the left on the spot. Lessanger Acknya, who played center field with a minor last season, could be an option.

“I understand,” Mendoza said of Ackna. “He’s going to spend a lot of time with Antoan. [Richardson, the outfield coach].

“…He plays a lot, so here’s the opportunity.”

The Mets also called outfielder Jose Azocah, who can see the time at center.

When summoning Azócar, Mets made Righty Justin Hagenman an option, officially placing Siri in the 10-day IL, reminiscing on Max Kranick, which was easily selected on Wednesday.

Brett Baty (2-3 double and RBI) was a safe hit in five of his six past games.

“Batty shows he can do,” Mendoza said.

Paul Blackburn (inflammatory right knee) is expected to pitch two innings with High A Brooklyn on Saturday.

Daryl Strawberry, who was on hand to support the Mets’ annual Black Legacy game, celebrates the history of the Black Mets, was informed that the Department of Defense scrubbed and later recovered from an article about Jackie Robinson’s service in the Army.

“If they do, I’ll put them in shame,” Strawberry said. “It’s embarrassing to them because they had to fight so hard, and they didn’t just fight for themselves. He was fighting for uniformed colour players, from blacks to Latino players. If no one had been open for him, if no one had been opened for him, if no one had been opened for him.
