Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen engaged with the undocumented individual Kilmer Abrego Garcia, who was deported Thursday in his hometown El Salvador, gazing deeply and intimately into the eyes of the alleged wife abuser and MS-13 gang affiliates.
Senator Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador this week aiming to meet Abrego Garcia before returning to Maryland from Secott Prison (Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo), where he was held after his expulsion by the Trump administration. Van Hollen had been turned away in earlier attempts to meet Abrego Garcia this week.
Abrego Garcia had settled in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., after unlawfully entering the U.S. over a decade ago. The immigration court recognized him as a gang member of MS-13, leading to his deportation to El Salvador last month, despite an immigration court ruling suggesting he would return as part of a drive to expel Central and South American gang members following President Trump’s designation of him as part of a foreign terrorist organization (FTO). The administration contends that this FTO classification will block his return except to El Salvador.
