New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Plackin (D) announcement On Thursday, the state filed a lawsuit against a discrepancy in messaging applications.
Platkin I insisted The discrepancy engages in “illegal practices that expose NJ children to violent sexual content and child predators online.” He further denounced the platform of “deceptive and ruthless business practices.”
“Discord sells itself as a safe space for children, despite fully realising that the misleading safe environment of the application and LAX surveillance has become a major hunting ground for online predators that can be easily accessed by children.”
According to the discrepancy, “Even though parents know it’s a hunting ground for sexual predators, the app made them think it’s a safe space for children.”
More specifically, the lawsuit called for the platform’s direct messaging safety setting as deceiving parents. Discord’s Safety Messages feature automatically scans and deletes messages containing explicit content.
Despite alleged safety features, lurking predators can still “sneak, contact and sacrifice children,” the lawsuit states. The AG office said the platform “continues to fall and flat.”
Additionally, the platform allegedly misrepresented children under the age of 13 who could not create an account. The complaint said it requires Discord to simply enter a date of birth and not perform any additional checks to verify age.
“Discord sells itself as a safe space for children, despite fully realising that the misleading safe environment of the application and LAX surveillance has become a major hunting ground for online predators that are easily accessible to children,” said Platkin.
“Through these deceptive claims about its safe environment, discord has enabled the use of applications that are putting more and more children at risk. We are intended to stop this illegal activity and take responsibility for the harm it caused our children,” he added.
During Thursday Press conferencePlatkin said the messaging platform is “at the heart of many criminal cases, including predators who have been found to have used the app to engage in sexual grooming, extortion and exploitation.”
